The Richmond Hills


In case any of you wondered exactly where our house was, now you know! (X marks the spot) The hills behind our house are only a few minutes away and offer some really nice views. It's always a good idea to look at the sky before you set out though..in New Zealand, it can go from sunny and clear to a downpour very quickly, and I mean downpour!

    Hi Barbara, that are wonderful pictures of the landscape in New Zealand! Reminds me of the great time I had when travelling there in 2008/9.

Alright, so we made it to Queenstown, and again, managed to set up our tent just before it started raining. And rain it did! For the 3 days we were there, it poured almost non-stop. We didn't let that spoil our fun though. First of all, the campground we stayed at was the coolest campground I have ever seen! There were quirky little touches at every turn, and lots of re-purposed items that were super funky. The common areas were also the best I've seen, which was good, considering the time we spent indoors! Awesome outdoor kitchen at the campsite Neat old parking meters at the campground Queenstown is an adventure based city, with lots and lots of fun things to keep you busy. We shopped, dined and explored, and hit most of the attractions not to be missed. 10% chance of rain

I'm not generally someone who checks the weather, unless I'm planning a big outing like a hike or a weekend of camping, but since I've been in New Zealand, I find myself checking it constantly. The fact that I either walk or bike to get around is a big reason for this. Another reason is that the weather changes so quickly here. This brings me to the topic of hanging clothes out to dry: a fairly new concept for me, having always had a dryer, although I do recall having a clothes line at home as a kid. From an environmental standpoint, and also to be gentler on your clothes, I'm a big fan of drying clothes outside on the line. I think the fact that it's banned in certain areas, like Whistler, because it's unsightly, is ridiculous. For most New Zealanders, it's simply part of your everyday routine. Bay of Islands!

Back in Richmond, with our beach holiday fresh in our minds, Katie and I decided to plan our next adventure. We started looking for last minute travel deals, but quickly discovered that they don't exist in New Zealand. Here, the early bird gets the worm; plan your vacation 6 months in advance, and you get the bargains. Determined not to let that spoil our fun or blow our budget, we decided to try our luck at flying stand-by. Armed with our carry on bags and in search of some fun, we crossed our fingers and got David to drop us off at the airport. We were off to a good start, having arrived in Auckland a few hours later, thrilled at our luck so far. Lunch in Auckland We quickly decided on an evening flight to the Bay of Islands, and hung out in Auckland for the day.
